Lyrics:
Now this man, he is the shiftless kind
He don’t bring home no pay
Well, I shake this lazy pup and I try to get him up
And this is all he will say:

“I ain’t no lazy man”
He said, “I ain’t no lazy man,
But I just can’t seem to get
That work to fit into my plans”

He said to me, “Woman, I asked my poppa the other day,
And he said to me, ‘Son, what you wanna be?’”
Well that got my man to thinking
And he couldn’t decide, you see

‘Cause his pa, he’s an iceman
And in the winter he sells wood
Now he makes a little money
But to my man that ain’t so good
His poppa, he likes it
But my man, he don’t think that’s so nice
He says to me, “Honey, that sawin’ wood and totin’ ice
That ain’t no job for me”

“I ain’t no lazy man,
Oh, I ain’t no lazy man,
But I just can’t seem to get
That work to fit into my plans”

Like he told me, he said, “I told my father like this, I said,
‘Pop, I think maybe I’ll be a preacher man,
You know, an elder so-to-speak
Where I can walk around all dressed up every day
And work one night a week
And I’m gonna make arrangements with all the sisters
And get myself a regular beat
Then all I got to do is go from house to house
And talk and sleep and eat”

But here comes Sunday and he’s got to preach and sweat
He said to me, “Honey, that preachin’ and shoutin’ and jumpin’ on Sunday,
That ain’t no job for me.”

“I ain’t no lazy man,
Oh, I ain’t no lazy man,
But I just can’t seem to get That work to fit into my plans”

“Now you know I don’t like work
I wouldn’t work on a ship runnin’ down molasses river
Stoppin’ at butter stations and puttin’ on slapjack sandwiches
You know I don’t like workin’ and I’m gonna tell you why:
Some folks get killed goin’ to work
Some folks get killed comin’ from work
And some folks get killed at work
And man, I ain’t fixin’ to mess with it!”

“I ain’t no lazy man,
But I just can’t seem to get
That work to fit into my plans”
